An industry veteran of 35 years, Barbara launched a career in wine and food at the bucolic Bonny Doon Vineyard in Santa Cruz, CA, in 1985. Cellar work instilled in her a love of the craft that continues today. In 1998, Barbara moved to Paso Robles, CA. She held brand management posts at Central Coast wineries in CA including Wild Horse, Treana, Jackson Family Wines, and Kenneth Volk Vineyards, then returned to Bonny Doon Vineyard to oversee national sales and marketing. Smith has served as president of the Board of Directors for the national Rhone Rangers organization! Now that’s a story unto itself!

The history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is firmly entwined with papal history, as the name translates to “The
Pope’s new castle.” The region has a long and storied history of wine production, with vineyards dating back
to the 14th century. Today, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the largest appellation in the Rhône, with more than
8,000 acres under vine, and it produces only two wines: a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which represents 94% of
the production, and a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which represents the remaining 6%.

Meet the Wine Maker Maria Pica, Export and General Manager, Alentejo, Portugal
Born in small town of Évora, in southern Portugal, a graduate in food engineering, she began her career in 1994 at one of the most important wineries in the south of the country, João Portugal Ramos' as winemaker assistant on the oenology team, with experience in wine production at various wineries in the Alentejo and Tejo regions until 2000. After that, moved to the commercial area and was responsible for managing several export markets until 2018. She has been the commercial and marketing director of Quinta do Paral since 2019.
